Instructions for a Longer Canoe Trip in Rental

Carrying out a kayak trip that lasts at least overnight or typically about a week with Hit rental equipment from our base in Kaupinoja.

Welcome to rent kayaking equipment from us for a multi-day paddling trip. We offer you much more than just equipment rental to ensure the most successful trip possible.

It’s advisable to start planning a paddling trip based on our rental equipment well in advance, and to carry it out interactively by exchanging emails or even discussing with our staff over the phone. Interaction is especially important if you have little prior paddling experience or experience with multi-day paddling expeditions. If you’re coming to Finland from abroad, the distance you travel plays a significant role in understanding the local weather conditions and the nature of the paddling waters. If you are Swedish and have done similar trips on lakes in your home country, you’ll have a good understanding of the challenges you’ll face in Finland. The same largely applies to Norwegians. If you’re coming from Germany, France, or elsewhere in Europe and have undertaken river paddling trips in your home country, you probably don’t have an understanding of the wind power on large lakes without islands. If you’ve done sea kayaking expeditions in your home country, then our paddling conditions will most likely feel easy for you.

As general, we are a full-service paddling company for our rental customers. We don’t just rent out equipment and leave everything else for the customer to figure out. When the customer desires, we can assist in many ways to help ensure the most successful trip possible, even though it remains a self-guided service that the customer is responsible for. Purchasing the additional services we offer can be a very worthwhile investment for the overall success of the trip.

The key to understanding this service concept is the location of our base on the southern shore of Näsiselkä, a fairly large open inland lake, in a completely unprotected area without islands. To the north of our base stretches a completely island-free open lake for a minimum of 10 km, which is also several kilometers wide at its narrowest point, and more than 10 km wide at its broadest from east to west.

This means that when departing from our base into a strong north wind, the trip’s toughest challenges are encountered right from the first meters. Similarly, with a strong tailwind, the challenges develop during the first couple of hours of paddling, to the point where turning back might be even more difficult than continuing forward. Easterly and westerly winds can also be challenging, as there are large

The above is not meant to scare anyone, but rather to provide a brief description of what needs to be considered when planning a trip. We also offer ways to avoid the challenges of the initial conditions. The primary starting point here is the weather/wind forecast for the few days following the departure and our subsequent recommendation for the customer’s approach. This could mean the following:

1. We transport customers to a better starting point and/or pick them up by car from where they decide to end their trip. The mileage fee for this is 1,15 €/km. On Lake Näsijärvi, the waters become more sheltered and maze-like about 25 km north of our base. This means that 80 km of transport (round trip) is the minimum needed to move the paddling starting point to a more sheltered area. Similarly, if on the return leg of the trip there is a strong south wind at our base and the trip needs to be ended in a more sheltered location, the same amount of transport is required. If more transport is desired, we can access even more sheltered starting/ending points, such as Murole Canal (approx. 120 km), Ruovesi (approx. 140 km), Visuvesi (approx. 170 km), or Virrat (approx. 200 km). The waters south of Tampere are somewhat more sheltered, though there are still open lake sections. The main difference is that suitable camping spots are significantly fewer. If you are planning to rent kayaking equipment from us for a multi-day trip, it is advisable to budget for transport costs in your trip plan, as these may arise if wind conditions at our base are too challenging at the start and/or end of your trip.< 2. We assist customer groups in selecting the appropriate equipment based on their average paddling skill level: kayaks or Canadian canoes, single or double kayaks, two-person or three-person Canadian canoes, or big voyager canoes. Different types of equipment are easier or more challenging for inexperienced paddlers in difficult conditions, and they vary slightly in price. Single kayaks are the most expensive per paddler, and big voyager canoes are the cheapest. For example, with double kayaks, even less experienced paddlers can manage much tougher winds and waves than with single kayaks. Likewise, our big voyager canoes are much easier to control in strong winds than two-person Canadian canoes. In a big voyager canoe, it is enough to have one experienced paddler in the stern, especially in more challenging conditions to keep the canoe on course, while the others just need enough stamina to paddle effectively forward, even in a strong headwind. In two-person Canadian canoes, at least one person in each canoe must know how to paddle properly, and the other must have enough stamina to paddle forward, as an increasing wind conditions. 3. Our service concept also includes assisting the customer in packing their gear into the chosen kayaks or canoes. Those with little paddling experience often don't have a clear idea of the essential items to bring along. If necessary, we rent out tents for camping, sleeping bags for overnight stays, and stoves for cooking. The rental of paddling equipment includes the necessary number of waterproof gear bags/barrels, a map, and a compass. The more compactly you can pack your gear, without compromising on spare clothes and rain gear, the better. It is possible to refill drinking water supplies along the route at intervals of around 10 kilometers. The lake water on the paddling trip is not suitable for drinking as is, but it is fine for cooking and washing dishes when boiled. 4. We can also arrange a short training session (approx. 2 hours), and based on that, the decision will be made about where the paddling trip will start, and equipment choices can still be adjusted. The price is 35 € per person. During such a quick training session, we get a fairly good idea of the customer’s paddling skills. When we combine that with the weather forecast, our recommendation for the paddling equipment and the starting point of the trip is based on a quite realistic understanding. If the customer is uncertain whether they want to paddle the trip in kayaks or Canadian canoes, two separate two-hour training sessions may be needed—one for kayak training and another for Canadian canoe training. 5. Our guide can also accompany the group as a support paddler for a few hours on the first day. The price is 60 € per paddling hour. By paddling with the group during the first hours, our support paddler will continuously learn more about the group’s skill level and appropriate average paddling speed. Based on this information, they can provide even more precise guidance for route choices for the upcoming paddling days.
